Who I Am
My name is T-T-Travis Althouse and I s-s-stutter.
I’m a licensed speech-language pathologist, stuttering specialist, and children’s book author.
I also create social media content about stuttering awareness and education @Travis.Suttering. I share all about what stuttering is, what it’s like to live with a stutter, and tips for how to best interact with stutterers in everyday life.
I encourage others to focus on what people say rather than how they say it.
My History With Stuttering
I first started stuttering at age 8 and spent the next two decades in and out of speech therapy trying to manage my stutter. But throughout that entire time, I felt deeply uncomfortable with who I was and how I was seen by others.
I hated my stutter and how it made me feel.
Stuttering shaped my life in ways I couldn’t ignore. It influenced what I said, when I said it, who I spoke to, where I went, and what I chose to do literally every single day of my life. I became extremely self-conscious about what I was capable of and how others perceived me, simply because my body wouldn’t let me communicate as smoothly as everyone else.
After many years of struggling, I decided to seek a more proactive path. I became a speech therapist because I wanted to better understand stuttering and help others navigate similar challenges that I had faced myself.
As a stuttering specialist, my goal isn't just to help people speak more easily… it's to help them realize they don't have to let their insecurities define what's possible for their lives. We can move forward despite our real and perceived limitations.
After all, how can we ever truly accept ourselves if we’re always trying to hide our insecurities? Vulnerability is a strength.
It’s okay to stutter.
